TitleLecture "Balsam für die Seele! Die Bedeutung von Lernen für das Wohlbefinden im späteren Lebensalter" [Balsam for the Soul. The importance of learning for well-being in later life]
Lecturer         Prof. John Field, The Stirling Institute of Education, University of Stirling, Scotland
DateThursday 5 March 2009
LocationCenter for Continuing Education at the University of Graz
ContentThis lecture examined the influence of continuing education on the well-being of adults – and in particular older adults. Until recently, this topic was, more often than not, neglected by researchers, who concentrated their efforts on examining the effects of continuing education on an individual’s economic situation, especially in the case of young adults in employment. At the present, there is a growing interest in the general benefits of continuing education for individuals, also in regard to the influence of learning on one’s social and personal well-being. Current research, with a few exceptions, shows that these effects are generally positive. Continuing education, especially for older adults, fosters flexibility, and helps to slow the loss of cognitive abilities and to improve the quality of life. The goal is to help older adults make optimum use of their capabilities and lessen their dependence on others, which requires a considerable contribution from the public purse and society in general.
